TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY SERVICE OVERVIEW 

Our Training and Consultancy Service developed from a real need to support people with Down syndrome better in the community.  Our vision is that people with Down sydnrome live a life of their choice and make their contribution to the community.  Our mission is to support people with Down syndrome to achieve their goals.  The Service provides training and information to the people in the community who interact with and support people with Down syndorme, on their journey to achieving their goals. 

Training and Consultancy Service:

Down Syndrome WA has delivered seminars, workshops, small group sessions and lectures to a wide audience over many years.  Our professional development for teaching staff is highly regarded and over 100 teachers and assistants from schools all over WA attend these workshops each year.  

Training:

We offer education and training for:

  • Teaching staff:  Teachers, Teacher Assistants
  • Maternity nursing staff in hospitals
  • Nursing students
  • Other health care providers
  • Allied health personnel including therapy staff
  • Child care workers
  • Support workers in accommodation / respite / ATE services

Our trainers:

All our training programs are presented by skilled and experienced facilitators.  Our trainers are people who have both personal and professional knowledge and experience of Down syndrome and disability generally.

JULIE IRELAND

Julie has a Masters degree in Science education and spent 11 years in the teaching profession.  She has worked for the last 8 years coordinating Family Support for Down Syndrome WA.  As well as helping families, her role has included support to teachers and other staff who call for advice, talking to class groups of students, and consulting at staff meetings.  Julie has a 17 year old son with Down syndrome.  Julie also represents the Association on committees including the Telethon Institute Consumer and Community Reference Group.

JACKIE SOFTLY

Jackie works in an Information and Development role at Down Syndrome WA.  She has extensive experience in the disability area, having a 24 year old son with Down syndrome and working in the field for many years.  Jackie has over six years experience as an Independent Standards Monitor for the Disability Services Commission and also works as a private disability and access consultant.  The consultancy work includes the development and presentation of disability related training for government and non-government agency employees and school children, auditing for access, organisational and disability planning and policy development.  Jackie is currently Chairperson of the WA Ministerial Advisory Council on Disability.

JUSTIN MARSHALL

Justin is 26 and has Down syndrome.  He is an experienced public speaker, having delivered speeches at local and international events.  He has been involved in disability awareness training for local government staff, disability support workers and primary school children.  Justin is a fan of rock music and is a keen sportsman.

We have access to other trainers as required.

Our fees:

Fees vary according to the type of training and its duration.  A maximum number of twenty participants is recommended.  Fees include:

  • development of tailored training materials
  • provision of training
  • a resource file for the organisation
  • written feedback about the workshop

We are able to bring our own laptop and media projector on request.  The fee does not include:

  • venue hire and catering
  • advertising of workshops
  • coordination of enrolments
  • audio-visual equipment hire e.g. DVD player, whiteboard / flip chart
  • travel and accommodation expenses for locations outside metropolitan Perth
