March 21st is World Down Syndrome day, officially recognised by the United Nations for the first time in 2012.

On this day, people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome. World Down Syndrome Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness about what it means to have Down syndrome and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our communities. It is an opportunity to highlight their strengths, their achievements, what they have to say, their active involvement in the community, their personal contributions to the community and just who they are!

We will be celebrating in WA with the rest of the world!

Come on board with us, join in the celebration and help raise awareness about the potential of people with Down syndrome.

  1. Share the new Saatchi & Saatchi World Down Syndrome Day video in your networks
  2. Visit the Down Syndrome Australia national World Down Syndrome Day website and consider making a donation to your state organisation
  3. Be involved in the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign – being promoted everywhere all around the world – in schools, workplaces, businesses
  4. More in WA – TBA soon
  5. Celebrate in your own way with someone you know who has Down syndrome

 Share the video:

Down Syndrome Australia has joined a number of other national Down syndrome associations around the world to support the production and distribution of a new Saatchi and Saatchi video, to be released for World Down Syndrome Day. Down Syndrome WA will be sharing the video with you as soon as it is ready – we anticipate it will be available before 21st March. A copy will be available here on our website and we will be circulating it throughout our networks. Enjoy and spread the word! Please forward it to others in your networks. The theme this year is: My Community?? (need to check)

Lots of Socks campaign

LOS

Down Syndrome WA, along with other Australian states and territories, will be promoting the International ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign. We want to get people talking about World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March. We can do this if we all wear socks…..BUT NOT JUST ANY SOCKS….brightly coloured socks, long socks, printed socks, 1 sock. Wear something which people will ask you about so that you can tell them all about World Down Syndrome Day. It is easy to do, so whether you are at home, school, uni, work, play, travel, holiday or anywhere, join in! See more at official Lots Of Socks page via Down Syndrome International.

In WA we are promoting ‘Lots of Socks’ in schools, along with a specially produced schools package that can be used by teachers to raise awareness. Ask your child’s teacher or school to join in by holding a ‘Lots of Socks’ day, raise awareness and help fundraise for DSWA.

Another WA event – TBA soon

Or simply celebrate in your own way with someone you know who has Down syndrome. Watch the video together with friends, wear eye-catching socks, talk about the achievements of people with Down syndrome.
